AI Coding Assistants in Production: A 2026 Comparison (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, Aider)

AI coding assistants comparison

Every week another AI coding tool launches. After running four of them, Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and Aider, across real engagements for six months, here is our honest comparison. No affiliate links, no marketing-speak.

Claude Code

The most capable of the four for complex, multi-file changes. Agentic workflow: it plans, edits, runs tests, iterates. Best for refactors, migrations, bug triage, and onboarding. Weakest at quick "complete this line" autocomplete.

Cursor

Editor-first, IDE-native. Best for engineers who live in a code editor all day and want AI woven into edit-time. Tab completion is excellent; chat sidebar is fine; agent mode is improving but still trails Claude Code on long tasks.

GitHub Copilot

Still the strongest inline-completion experience because of how deeply it sits in your IDE. Free or low-cost for individuals. The chat and agent features are catching up but not yet best-in-class.

Aider

Open source, terminal-based. Brilliant for engineers who already prefer a CLI and Git workflow. Slightly less polished than Claude Code but transparent and hackable.

The 2026 stack we'd give a new hire

  • Cursor or VS Code + Copilot for daily edit-time productivity.
  • Claude Code for anything spanning more than one file or that benefits from planning.
  • Aider for engineers who want a fully scriptable, terminal-only flow.

Stack them, don't pick one. The combined cost is < ₹6,000/month per engineer and routinely pays back 10x.

How we choose for client work

For an external dedicated developer engagement, we let the engineer pick, fluency matters more than the tool. For internal product work, we standardise on Claude Code + Cursor because most of our refactor and migration workloads need agentic flows.

The deeper question isn't which tool, it's whether your engineers can use these tools well. See our take on hiring AI-first developers.
